Youth Malaria Prevention Campaign

Me and My Net Competition
The RCS's newest project, Me and My Net, will get young people around the Commonwealth thinking about one of the most important global issues of our day... malaria.
There are around 500 million cases of malaria every year, resulting in up to one million deaths. Yet we have long known of simple ways of preventing the disease. For example, sleeping under a mosquito net every night protects people in malarial regions, provided that the net is used properly.
We believe that young people can and should have a say about this important issue... especially because it is often young people who suffer most from the disease. So here's your opportunity to make your voice heard... and in a fun and creative way!
Me and My Net includes writing, photography and film competitions, as well as an online discussion. We'd love you to get involved! Read on for more information...
Enjoy writing, drawing, film or photography?
Want to be the next radio or TV star?
Between April and September 2011, under-18 year olds can enter our competitions to put forward their ideas... and be in with a chance of winning great prizes like a trip to London, computers, camera equipment and books for you and your school.
You can enter online, by post, or via RCS facebook page.
Please check the RCS website for full details of the prizes up for grabs, the questions you should answer and information about how to submit your entry. There are also education resources available for you to download for free.
And, whatever your age, we invite you to contribute to our online discussion about malaria
other RCS Youth Competitions - closing soon!
The 2011 Young Commonwealth Competitions in film, photography and writing are still open to entries, but deadlines are fast approaching! Young people from around the Commonwealth are invited to make their voice heard. This year, entrants are encouraged to get creative with the 2011 theme - 'Women as Agents of Change'.
Would you like to win a trip to London, meet famous authors, film directors and photographers, and see your entries exhibited around the world? If so, join the thousands of young people that enter our competitions every year. Our winners are often those picking up a camera or putting pen to paper for the first time. There are no right answers! What we're looking for is a creative spark, a unique insight, a new idea...
To enter the world's oldest and largest schools writing competition, get your essays in by the 1st May. Photographers have until the 1st June and filmmakers should submit their entries by 1st July. See our website for more information and enter online now! Contact

2) More than 600 attend PCF6

More than 600 people from more than 50 countries attended COL's Sixth Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning (PCF6) in Kochi, Kerala, India from 24-28 November. PCF6 was co-hosted in India in partnership with the Indira Gandhi National Open University. Conference Co-Chairs were Professor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, and Sir John Daniel, President and C.E.O. of COL. PCF6’s Honorary Chair was Professor M.S. Swaminathan.

Delegates explored the contribution of open and distance learning to international development goals, by opening up access to learning at every level. The theme was Access & Success in Learning: Global Development Perspectives. Sub themes were: Social Justice, Community Development, Skills Development and Formal Education.
PCF6’s daily newsletters with photos, published by IGNOU, can be read here: www.col.org/pcf.
Over 300 papers were included in the programme, which are available for all at http://wikieducator.org/PCF6.
Several keynote presentations, including Sir John’s sum-up (Access and Success in Learning: Your Conclusions) are available at www.col.org/speeches.
Reports, conclusions and impressions of PCF6 from COL staff are at www.col.org/blog (comments welcome).
News items published in the Indian and other national press have been collected by COL at www.delicious.com/Commonwealth_of_Learning/PCF6.
PCF6 participants are invited to complete an online survey that will help us to evaluate the Forum: www.surveymonkey.com/s/PCF6

In addition to COL and IGNOU other PCF6 sponsors included the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), UNESCO, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS, India), the Commonwealth Secretariat, The Open University (U.K.) and the University of London. Sponsorship funds are directed entirely to travel subsidies for over 100 delegates from Commonwealth developing countries – none of whom have received funding from COL in the past to attend a PCF – and ensure that there is representation from as many member states as possible. Thank you to all.
